Bullion Coins and IRA
A “bullion IRA” is often used to describe a retirement account that is backed by precious metal bullion coins from around the world.
If you’re concerned about the reliability of paper currency or the volatile stock market – both of which can significantly eat away at your hard-earned retirement savings – then a precious metals IRA may be right for you. One of the first steps to opening your bullion IRA account will be deciding which coins to add. Let’s take a look at some of your options.
Which bullion coins are approved for a precious metal IRA?
To be eligible for placement in a precious metals IRA, your metals must meet specific criteria set by the IRS. Below is a list of some of the most popular bullion coins that have been approved for IRAs. Your Precious Metal IRA Specialist at Birch Gold Group will be happy to go over each of your options in greater detail and help you decide which coins are best suited for your needs.
American Eagle
The American Eagle gold bullion coin is a 22-carat, 91% gold coin. First released in 1986, it was the first official gold bullion coin offered by the United States. Available in four versions: 1/10 oz., 1/4 oz., 1/2 oz. and 1 oz., it’s also the only gold coin approved for IRAs that has a purity less than 99%.
The American Eagle is also available in silver and platinum, both of which can be added to a bullion IRA. A proof version of the coin is available as well – the only collectors’ coin that is approved for placement in an IRA, and a highly sought-after asset due to its limited annual production and immaculate presentation.
Canadian Maple Leaf
With a composition of 99.99% gold, the Canadian Maple Leaf was the world’s first 24-carat gold bullion coin when it was introduced in 1979. Today, it is available in five denominations: 1/20 oz., 1/10 oz., 1/4 oz., 1/2 oz. and 1 oz.
Silver, platinum and palladium versions of the Canadian Maple Leaf are also available and approved for precious metals IRAs.
Austrian Philharmonic
The Austrian Philharmonic gold coin is 1 oz. of 24 carat gold with a purity of 99.99%. Denominated in Euros, the coin’s design is noteworthy because it has the largest diameter of all 1 oz. pure gold legal tender bullion coins.
Silver and platinum versions of the Austrian Philharmonic are also available and eligible for placement in an IRA.
American Buffalo
The American Buffalo was the first 24-carat 99.99% pure gold bullion coin offered by the United States, released in 2006. It is offered in 1/10 oz., 1/4 oz., 1/2 oz., and 1 oz.
