BGG - WYSIWYG The Proof American Gold Eagle has remained U.S. Mint’s top-selling proof gold coin since its first mintage in 1986. These two-coin proof sets were only issued in 1987, the second year of the 1 oz eagle’s mintage, and the debut year for the 1/2 oz American gold eagle. This rarity alone makes this 2-coin set even more compelling…
Each set comes in its original packaging direct from the U.S. Mint, with each of the two date-matched proof coins sealed in acrylic capsules to protect their freshly-minted appearance. An official U.S. Mint Certificate of Authenticity is included as well.
Like all American eagle gold coins, these feature the iconic Lady Liberty design developed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the double eagle gold coin, widely regarded as one of the finest ever minted. The reverse features the Miley Busiek-designed family of American bald eagles. Designed in 1986 exclusively for the gold eagle series, this image includes a male eagle in flight over the family nest while a mother shelters a hatchling under her wing.
The American Gold Eagle Proof is already a greatly-valued addition to any collection – and this extremely rare 2-coin proof set is even more exclusive. Because of its limited mintage and its proof quality, these sets are highly sought-after and prized among gold owners. They’re thin on the ground, though, and they tend to sell out fast…
