Here it is, the very first 24-karat proof gold coin ever struck by the U.S. Mint. The American proof gold buffalo coin boasts troy 1 oz of 0.9999 or “four nines fine” gold, designed by the legendary James Earle Fraser.

At first we thought buffalo gold coins were a “remastering” of the original design, so we checked with the U.S. Mint. Turns out that yes, it was very slightly modified. Proof gold buffalo coins are based on the original artwork supplied by Fraser for the buffalo nickel. The original, or “Type 1” design, showed the  American bison on the coin’s reverse standing on a mound of dirt. and the text “five cents” stood even higher than the raised rim of the coin. This combination caused very fast wear. You’ll note many early buffalo nickels have heavy wear in this area. U.S. Mint caught this quickly, and tinkered with Fraser’s design to correct this issue. This modification to Fraser’s design has both a slightly lower relief and a raised rim on both sides of the coin. (Not that wear is exactly a concern for a proof 24-karat gold coin…)

The 1 oz proof gold buffalo coin is quite rare. Since its first mintage in 2006, total production averages just 36,365 per year (2006-2023). The specific mintage year you receive will be based on availability when we receive your order. Note that the U.S. Mint’s official presentation packaging and certificate of authenticity designs vary by year as well.

This is your opportunity to get your hands on a classic design straight out of American history, in pure gold. Due to their limited mintage, proof gold buffalo coins aren’t often available. So don’t hesitate to call us at (800) 355-2116 to confirm availability and pricing.

Please note specific U.S. Mint presentation packaging design varies based on mintage year.
