Platinum IRA-Eligible Coins Frequently Asked Questions

What is IRA eligible for platinum?

Any platinum with a purity of 99.95% that’s been produced by an accredited mint can be deposited into your precious metals IRA. The most popular platinum coin for deposit into an IRA is the American Platinum Eagle coin, being the official platinum coin of the U.S.

What type of coin can be held in an IRA?

As long as the coin meets IRS requirements for metal purity – which is 99.95% in the case of platinum and palladium, 99.99% for silver and 99.5% for gold – and provided it was produced by an accredited mint, then any type of coin can be held in an IRA. With that said, there aren’t that many platinum coins out there (owing to a small selection worldwide), so the American Platinum Eagle coin is the most popular.

What coins are platinum?

The most popular platinum coin is the American Platinum Eagle coin, although the Australian Platinum Florin is also popular with investors. Others include the Canadian Maple Leaf and the Austrian Philharmonic platinum coins.

Note: The terms “IRA-approved” and “IRS-approved” are commonly used by the public and others in the industry to describe precious metals that may be held in a self-directed IRA, but the IRS does not formally approve specific coins, bars, or rounds for IRA ownership. References to “IRA-approved” on this page should therefore be understood to mean precious metals that meet the applicable requirements specified in the Internal Revenue Code.
