Silver IRA-Eligible Coins

Investing in a precious metals IRA is one of the best ways to protect your wealth into the future. Not just any metal can go into an IRA account, however, and you’ll need to abide by strict IRS guidelines when it comes to purchasing and transferring in gold or silver.

For silver, only bullion with a purity of 99.9% will be accepted into custody for IRA accounts. Fortunately, we have a wide range of coins as well as rounds and bars for you to choose from, all of which are made from the highest quality silver you can buy.

Some of the most popular coins in the world can be found here, including the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf, Australian Florins, and the American the Beautiful Silver series.

Silver IRA-Eligible Coins Frequently Asked Questions

What type of coin can be held in an IRA?

Any design or variety of coin from any mint can be included in an IRA – provided it meets purity content requirements. For silver, that means it needs to be 99.9% pure; for gold, 99.5%; and platinum and palladium must be 99.95% pure.

What are the rules for a silver IRA?

Once you have your silver IRA set up (we can assist you with that if you have questions), you’ll need to appoint a custodian and then work with a dealer (such as Birch Gold) to identify high quality metals to transfer into your account. Only silver with a purity of 99.9% will be accepted. Your precious metals will be stored in a secure facility of your choosing.

Do you have to declare silver coins?

Silver is classified as a collectible by the IRS, meaning long-term capital gains on its sale are subject to a maximum tax rate of 28%. However, if you purchase silver within a precious metals IRA, you can defer or even eliminate taxes on gains. In a Traditional IRA, taxes are deferred until withdrawal, at which point distributions are taxed as ordinary income rather than capital gains. In a Roth IRA, qualified withdrawals — including any gains — are completely tax-free.

Note: The terms “IRA-approved” and “IRS-approved” are commonly used by the public and others in the industry to describe precious metals that may be held in a self-directed IRA, but the IRS does not formally approve specific coins, bars, or rounds for IRA ownership. References to “IRA-approved” on this page should therefore be understood to mean precious metals that meet the applicable requirements specified in the Internal Revenue Code.
